Self-serve
Also known as: self-service
A purchase process where users can activate a paid plan without sales involvement: foundational to every PLG motion.
Self-serve means a user can fully sign up, evaluate the product, and upgrade to a paid plan on their own, without ever needing a sales conversation. This requires transparent pricing, in-app upgrade flows, built-in billing, and clear feature tiers.
Self-serve is not an alternative to sales but a complement. PLG companies combine self-serve for SMB and individual users with sales-led motion for enterprise. The key effect: self-serve is dramatically capital-efficient, Customer Acquisition Cost is a fraction of a sales-driven motion at comparable ACV.
The biggest investment in self-serve is not checkout but onboarding: users must reach activation before they ever hit a paywall. Offering self-serve without solid onboarding produces low conversion and high churn.
