How to build a website that works for both — and why it matters more than you think.

Your website has a new kind of visitor. And it doesn't have eyes.

Right now, AI agents from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Perplexity are browsing the web alongside your human visitors. They're reading your pages, extracting your content, and deciding — in fractions of a second — whether your business is worth recommending to the millions of people who now ask AI for answers instead of typing into Google.

Here's the uncomfortable part: most websites were never built for this. They were built for humans who scroll, skim, and click. Not for machines that parse, tokenize, and synthesize.

And that gap? It's costing businesses visibility in the fastest-growing discovery channel on the planet.

The shift that's already happened

This isn't a prediction about the future. It's a description of the present.

In 2025, AI agents went from research curiosities to mainstream products. OpenAI launched Operator (now integrated as ChatGPT Agent mode), letting AI browse the web and complete tasks autonomously. Perplexity Comet does the same. Google Chrome shipped Auto Browse for premium subscribers. Open-source libraries like Browser Use have exploded, with over 21,000 GitHub stars, making it trivially easy for any developer to point an AI at any website.

The AI agents market hit $7.6 billion in 2025. That's not venture capital hype — that's real infrastructure being built to let machines interact with the web the way humans do.

Meanwhile, 60% of Google searches in 2026 are zero-click. People are getting their answers from AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity — without ever visiting your site. If AI can't understand your content, you don't exist in these answers.

So the question isn't whether to build for AI agents. It's whether you can afford not to.

The problem: websites built for human eyes only

Most websites today are designed with one audience in mind: a human being sitting in front of a screen. That's produced some beautiful experiences — rich JavaScript interactions, dynamic content loading, creative layouts, and clever animations.

It's also produced websites that are nearly impenetrable to AI agents.

Here's what goes wrong. Important content gets buried behind JavaScript that many AI crawlers can't execute. Key information lives inside images that machines can't read. Navigation depends on visual cues and interactive elements that make no sense to a text-processing model. Page structure is flat — no semantic HTML, no clear hierarchy, no machine-readable signals about what matters.

When a human visits your site, their brain does extraordinary work: they parse visual hierarchy, understand implicit context, and fill in gaps. An AI agent doesn't do any of that. It reads your HTML, your structured data, and your plain text. If those things are messy, incomplete, or absent, the agent moves on.

And here's what that means in practice: when someone asks ChatGPT "What's the best CRM implementation partner in the Netherlands?" and your website can't be understood by the model — you're invisible. Your competitor whose site is machine-readable gets the recommendation instead.

Building for both: the dual-audience website

The good news? Building a website that works for AI agents doesn't mean sacrificing the human experience. In fact, the principles that make a site agent-friendly tend to make it better for humans too. Clearer structure. Faster loading. Better accessibility. More intentional content.

Here's how to do it.

1. Start with semantic HTML

This is foundational, and it's free. Use proper heading hierarchy (H1 through H6). Use semantic elements like <nav>, <main>, <article>, <section>, and <aside>. These tags don't just help screen readers — they give AI agents a structural map of your page.

When an AI agent encounters a page with clean semantic HTML, it can immediately understand what's the title, what's navigation, what's the main content, and what's supplementary. When it encounters a soup of <div> elements, it's guessing.

Think of it this way: semantic HTML is the skeleton of your page. AI agents and search engines read the skeleton first. If the skeleton makes sense, everything else falls into place.

2. Implement structured data (Schema.org)

If semantic HTML is the skeleton, structured data is the label on every bone. It tells machines not just what content is on your page, but what that content means.

Use JSON-LD format (Google's explicit recommendation) to mark up your content. Depending on your site, you'll want schemas like Organization, Product, Article, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList, HowTo, or Service.

The impact is significant. Research shows that AI models like GPT-4 go from 16% to 54% correct responses when content is backed by structured data. Pages with proper schema markup get cited in AI-generated responses 3.2 times more often than pages without it.

This isn't optional anymore. It's the difference between being part of the AI conversation about your industry — and being left out of it entirely.

3. Don't hide content behind JavaScript

Many AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript. Google's crawler does. Most others don't.

That means if your pricing page, product descriptions, team bios, or key service information loads dynamically via JavaScript — a significant number of AI agents will never see it. They'll see an empty page with a loading spinner.

The fix: server-side render your critical content, or at minimum provide <noscript> fallbacks. Put your most important information high in the HTML source code, not behind interactive elements like accordions, tabs, or modals. If information matters, it should be visible in the raw HTML.

This also helps with page speed, SEO, and accessibility. Triple win.

4. Create an llms.txt file

This is the newest addition to the web standards conversation, and it's gaining traction fast. The llms.txt file — proposed by Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI in 2024 — sits in your root directory alongside robots.txt and sitemap.xml. But instead of telling search engines what to crawl, it tells AI models where your most important, authoritative content lives.

The format is Markdown (because that's what LLMs understand best), and it provides a curated overview of your site: what it's about, where the key resources are, and how the content is organized.

Over 844,000 websites have already implemented llms.txt. Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, Nvidia, Anthropic, and Cloudflare all use it on their own sites. While no AI platform has formally committed to reading the file, the directional evidence is strong — and the cost of implementation is near zero.

Think of it as a welcome mat for AI: "Here's who we are, and here's our best content."

5. Update your robots.txt for AI crawlers

Your robots.txt might be blocking AI agents without you realizing it. If you have a broad Disallow: / under User-agent: *, you're shutting out GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and others.

Review your robots.txt and make conscious decisions about access. For most businesses that want AI visibility, you'll want to explicitly allow key AI crawlers:

User-agent: GPTBot
Allow: /

User-agent: ClaudeBot
Allow: /

User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /

You can still block sensitive directories. The point is to be intentional rather than accidentally invisible.

6. Provide clean, text-first content

AI agents work best with clear, well-structured text. That means writing content that is scannable, uses natural language, and anticipates the questions people actually ask.

Structure your pages with clear headings that tell the story on their own. Write concise paragraphs. Answer questions directly rather than burying answers inside marketing fluff. If someone might ask "How much does this cost?" or "What's included?" — make those answers findable and explicit.

This isn't dumbing down your content. It's making it precise. And precision is exactly what both AI agents and busy human readers appreciate.

7. Maintain clean APIs and data feeds

For businesses with products, services, or dynamic content: consider offering an API, RSS feed, or structured product feed that AI agents can consume directly. Microsoft's NLWeb protocol combines LLMs with sitemaps and RSS feeds to enable agent access. OpenAI's plugin specification lets sites expose capabilities via OpenAPI schemas.

This is more advanced territory, but the direction is clear. The companies that provide programmatic, structured access to their data will be the ones AI agents interact with first. If you already have an API for integrations — consider documenting it well and making it discoverable. You might be surprised who starts using it.

8. Optimize for speed and accessibility

AI agents have shorter timeouts than human visitors. If your page takes 4 seconds to load, a human might wait. An AI agent probably won't.

Fast page loads, clean HTML, accessible content, and minimal JavaScript bloat all contribute to agent-readability. And every single one of these also improves your Google Core Web Vitals, your accessibility compliance, and your human user experience.

The point is worth repeating: almost everything that makes a site better for AI agents also makes it better for humans. You're not choosing between two audiences. You're building one solid foundation that serves both.

The bigger picture: your website as a living interface

Here's what's really happening. Your website is evolving from a brochure people visit into an interface that machines query on behalf of people. The person asking ChatGPT about your industry may never visit your site directly. But if your content is machine-readable, well-structured, and authoritative — your expertise shows up in their answer.

That's a profound shift. It means your website's influence now extends far beyond the people who click your link. It reaches everyone whose AI assistant can access and understand your content. A strong marketing strategy must now account for this new reality.

Building for both humans and AI agents isn't a nice-to-have optimization. It's the new baseline for being visible, discoverable, and relevant in a world where AI is the first touchpoint for more and more decisions.

The websites that adapt now will own the conversation. The rest will wonder where their traffic went.
